An Internet search yields many sources of free website templates. For example, Google returns 420,000 results for the phrase “free website templates”!
These templates often have restrictions in terms of how they may be used. For example, in some cases a free template may only be used to build a non-commercial or personal website, or the website you build may need to include a link back to the website you got the template from.
It is also wise to remember that, quite often, you get what you pay for. A free website template may not be as well supported (if at all) as a purchased template. This is not true of all free template providers, but it is certainly true of many.
Some website template designers who offer free templates are offering them as an example of the work they do, to back up their collection of paid templates. Or they may be just starting out, and would like to gain a good reputation for quality work before charging for it. Others may be creating free templates as a hobby, or as a diversion from their day to day work, and do it purely for enjoyment.
In general, if you are creating a small personal website, just for viewing by your family and friends, and you don’t mind restrictions and don’t need any support, then go ahead with a free website template – after all, the price is right :-)
If you have a business website, or are interested in creating a professional impression, it is well worth it to pay for a properly supported template created by a professional designer. Remember – it’s still a template, so you’re not paying huge amounts for a custom design.
