Common Usage Restrictions on Free Website Templates

Free website templates are generally subject to certain restrictions. Be sure to read the "Terms Of Use" for the free website template carefully. If unsure, ask the designer or template provider for clarification.

Some common restrictions on your usage of a free template are:

(Not all free templates are subject to these restrictions, these are common examples):

  1. Generally the website you got the free template from requires a link back, usually from the home page of the website you build with the template, and/or from every page.
  2. You may be required to include a footnote "Designed by ... XYZ" crediting the template designer.
  3. Sometimes you may use the free website template for a non-commercial site only.
  4. Generally the free templates are provided "as is".
  5. In some cases the terms of use expressly state that no support is provided for free templates.

This is not an exhaustive list. Each website offering free website templates has its own list of requirements. And, although in the minority, you may find a template designer who does not restrict usage at all.
