Using a Free Website Template for a Personal Website

When designing a non-commercial website for your personal use, you may consider using a free website template as the basis for your website design.

By "Personal Website", I mean a site you are creating for your family and friends to visit, perhaps to describe your recent holiday or to show pictures of your pets or kids.

The concept of a website being many peoples first point of contact with you, and therefore needing to convey the right image, is far less of an issue with a personal website. You may be able to absorb the restrictions and possible pitfalls of using a free template much more readily. In fact, in many cases, the restrictions on free web templates prohibit you using them for anything other than a non-commercial website.

Do keep in mind that you will be better off with some experience in creating websites before you use a free website template, as you cannot expect a free resource to be fully supported. Some designers are happy to support their free templates in the hope that one day you will purchase a template, but many designers concentrate their support efforts on their paying customers.

You may also find that free templates look less professional, and are not as well put together, as a proper commercial template. You may find your template difficult to customize, and it may not display correctly in all browsers. These are some of the common pitfalls.

In summary, if you find a free website template that you like and want to use for your personal, non-commercial website, why not give it a bash. Use it as a learning experience, and enjoy creating your website.
