Any business or professional site, even a non-commercial website which provides information only, is a reflection of yourself. It is your window to your internet customers / visitors, and should reflect an appropriate image.

If you are serious about your business, or about the information you provide online, you should be able to accept paying a relatively small amount for a professionally made, properly supported premium template. After all, you're still saving a great deal of money by not having a full custom website designed.
You will also ensure that you will be able to get the help you need if you get stuck using the template, and you are less likely to run into other websites using the same design. Some free website templates have an amateurish look, and obviously you should avoid that.
If you are not even a little bit serious about your business or professional endeavour, and about using your website to accurately portray yourself, then you will find that your website visitors are not serious about using your services.
