Online sources of website templates fall into three main categories.
- Free website template providers
Many sources of free templates exist on the Internet. These templates often have restrictions in their use, for example they may only be used for a non-commercial website, or the website may need to include link back to the template provider. They may not be as professionally executed, or as well supported (if at all) as a purchased template.

- Template membership packages
Certain website templare stores offer a membership package, whereby one pays either a fixed or recurring fee for access to a large number and variety of templates. Such packages devalue the individual templates by making them available to so many people at very low relative cost, thus vastly increasing the likelihood of one finding another website using the same template as you want to use. The templates provided by template membership websites are over-saturating the market.

- Template stores offering website templates for sale individually
Purchasing one or more well-chosen templates from a professional website template store, rather than purchasing a membership or choosing a restrictive free template, is the best way to ensure that you receive a product that will be well supported, and not over-used on the Internet.
