Designing a Logo for your Website
If your business does not already have a logo, then you may want to hire a professional designer to create a logo for you that will work well in all forms of media - online, in brochures, letterheads and business cards.
If, however, you just want a logo for your online presence, here are some tips to keep in mind when designing it.
- Original Design
Your logo should be unique, so as to distinguish you from your competitors. You would then be able to trademark it if you wish. In some industries, however, many businesses have logos with a similar element - such as a house symbol for real estate agents, or use of the colour blue for technology companies. You can consider incorporating one of these unifying elements, so that your business is clearly recognisable as being in a particular industry.
- Keep your logo simple
A simple logo is more easily recognisable than a complicated logo. It also displays better at different resolutions, and can be easily printed in different sizes without losing its impact.
- Correct size
A website logo should preferably be approximately square in dimensions, and not too small - or too large. Around 150 pixels square is a good starting size. A small logo will be "lost" on the web page, whereas a very large logo will overly dominate and use up valuable web page space that could be filled with content.
- Few colors
80% of the world's most recognized logos use only one or two colours. Decide on one to three basic colours for your logo. Choose colours from the web-safe colour palette, so that your logo looks the same in all browsers and on all platforms.
- Easy To Read
If your logo incorporates text, use a large, clearly legible font. Avoid lots of small words that will be illegible at lower resolutions.
